Having an issue with your Air Consumption while Scuba Diving?
We have time and time over heard divers say, āIām bad with airā I need a 15L tank or side mount to do a 1 hour recreational multi level dive at 26m to 6m. This is not because of the way you breath alone, although this has a big factor to play. It is more about weighting, trim, buoyancy and allowing your brain to relax.
Once you have mastered buoyancy, got your weighting correct the easiest part then in controlling your breathing rate. There are many methods to control breathing while Scuba Diving and we are always happy to discuss this with you on your day of diving with us.
Breath in short and out long method!
The trigger to make us breath as humans is not the need for oxygen. The greater the level of Carbon Dioxide in our blood system the deeper our brain forces us to breath. Therefore, breath a small breath in, its enough to get the oxygen we require, and a much longer breath out, this expels as much Carbon Dioxide as possible. In addition there is a two fold effect! We expel more carbion dioxide calming our brain to a meditative state of calmness, as well as breathing less air from our tanks.
The longer we breath out, the less air we breath in from our tank meaning the longer it lasts.
PRO-TIP
While descending breath out fully, and we donāt mean like we would on the surface, we mean until you cant breath out any further at all. Once your on your way down inflate your BCD slightly just enough to make you slightly negatively buoyant still. Then breath in a small amount and out for longer than you breath inā¦ā¦. sounds impossible but you can do it! If you breath in for 3 seconds, breath out for 6 seconds.
Watch how easy it is to adjust your buoyancy up and down when you breath only from the bottom section of your lungs and not all of them!
Breath using your tonge!
If you find the short in long out method too hard? Then put your tonge in it! Put your Tonge into the mouthpiece hole and breath through it like slurping your air. This slows the air coming out of the regulator. We donāt need all of it thatās for sure, again the slower the flow of air from the tank the longer the tank will last you under water. This applies even at depth if not more so.
Why donāt we need all the air that the regulator give us? Because air is made up of 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogenā¦..and we donāt want the nitrogen anyway. Plus the air we breath out contains 16% of the oxygen we breathed in to begin with! Meaning we have way too much oxygen and the only reason our body triggers us to breath is the build up of Carbon Dioxide in our blood. So breathing less air isnāt bad for us, its actually good, it reduces the amount of nitrogen absorbed into our blood as well as meaning we have better bottom time.
