BCD Sizing and Style Guide

A buoyancy control device should fit securely without restricting normal breathing or movement. Use the size chart for the exact model, with the exposure protection you intend to wear.

Jacket, back-inflate and modular styles

Jacket BCDs place buoyancy around the torso. Back-inflate designs place it behind the diver, while modular backplate-and-wing systems allow components to be selected separately. Compare familiarity, fit, travel requirements and the diving you are qualified to undertake.

Fit and lift capacity

Manufacturer size ranges may use height, weight or chest measurements. Check strap adjustment, cylinder stability and how the BCD sits when worn. Lift requirements depend on the complete equipment configuration; do not choose lift solely from body weight.

Integrated weights and accessories

Read what is included. Weight pockets, trim pockets, inflator hoses, crotch straps and accessory mounts may differ between packages. Check compatibility before adding a separately listed pocket or accessory.

Ordering the correct version

  • Select the exact size and model variant.
  • Check whether the listing is a complete BCD or an accessory.
  • Compare dry weight if airline travel is a priority.
  • Ask for help if your measurements fall between sizes.

Before first use

Have the equipment configured and checked by a competent person. Become familiar with the inflation, deflation and weight-release systems in a controlled environment, following your training.
