Underwater breathing equipment, gas density and exercise can increase the work of breathing. A diver who works harder may need more ventilation while also facing more resistance to breathing.

Trying to save gas by deliberately holding or skipping breaths is not a sound solution. Maintain the breathing practices taught in your training, manage workload and tell your buddy or instructor about difficulty. Persistent or unusual breathlessness should not be dismissed as simply being unfit.

The gases have different effects

Oxygen is essential, but unsuitable oxygen exposure can be harmful. Nitrogen at increased pressure can contribute to narcosis and impaired judgement. Carbon dioxide can build up when ventilation does not meet the body’s needs, particularly with increased workload or other contributing factors.

These are different mechanisms, not interchangeable names for feeling uncomfortable. Do not self-diagnose underwater or use a website to decide a gas mixture or treatment. End a problematic dive according to your training and obtain appropriate assistance.

Personal readiness changes from day to day

A qualification is not a medical clearance for every future dive. Illness, fatigue, new symptoms and medication changes may require discussion with an appropriate clinician and the operator’s participant screening process. Tell the team about relevant concerns before boarding or entering the water.

Cold and exertion can affect comfort and performance even in a warm-water destination. Choose suitable exposure protection, avoid a rushed start and keep the planned dive within your current ability. A day off is a reasonable outcome when you are not ready.

Go a little deeper

gas density and task loading interact

With increasing pressure, an otherwise unchanged gas mixture becomes denser. Breathing resistance and equipment performance depend on the configuration and conditions. Add strenuous swimming or anxiety and the diver’s workload may rise further. This is one reason technique, appropriate equipment and a realistic route belong together. Deeper diving should develop through formal training rather than by treating a numerical depth limit as an objective to reach.

Check your understanding

Can this lesson tell me whether I am medically fit to dive?

No. It provides general education. Use the required participant screening process and seek personalised advice from a clinician familiar with diving medicine when indicated. For serious symptoms after diving, seek emergency medical care promptly.

Connect theory with training

Rescue and first-aid training

Returning to diving after a break

Discuss your planned visit

For a Pattaya trip, tell the team your qualification, last-dive date and learning goals so the practical programme can be matched to you.

Continue learning

Rescue Diver Theory: Stress, Prevention and Emergency Planning

Dive Planning: Breathing Gas, Computers and Buddy Limits

Dalton’s and Henry’s Laws: Breathing Gases and Decompression

Back to Physics and physiology

Sources and further reading

DAN: lungs and diving

DAN: diving-related physiology and injuries

This is an independently written educational guide, not an official PADI course manual or certification assessment.
