A familiar site still needs assessment for the day. Qualification cards describe training history but do not reveal every diver\u2019s current confidence or recent practice.<\/p><p>Ask about the last dive, relevant experience, equipment and goals. A group containing photographers, returning divers and newly certified divers may need different organisation from a group with many recent dives together. Work within the supervision and ratios required for the programme.<\/p><\/section><section id=\"topic-1\"><h2>A briefing should answer useful questions<\/h2><p>Explain where the group is going, who is with whom, the planned limits, communication and how the dive will finish. Include the response to separation, changes of plan and emergencies. Invite questions and check understanding rather than measuring success by how much information you delivered.<\/p><p>Keep operational instructions specific. \u201cStay close\u201d can mean different things to different people; clarify the arrangement that works for the conditions and programme. If conditions change enough to invalidate the briefing, reassess and communicate a revised plan.<\/p><\/section><section id=\"topic-2\"><h2>Awareness is more than leading from the front<\/h2><p>Monitor the team\u2019s position, depth control, gas communication and signs of difficulty. A leader who swims ahead without checking the group may be navigating well while supervising poorly. Supporting divers includes noticing when a simpler route is preferable.<\/p><p>Professional judgement also means recognising your scope. Divemaster is a professional qualification with defined roles; it is not an instructor qualification or automatic authority to conduct every course. Follow current organisational standards, local requirements and the operator\u2019s procedures.<\/p><\/section><section class=\"edu-deeper\" id=\"deeper\"><p class=\"edu-kicker\">Go a little deeper<\/p><h2>human factors in ordinary decisions<\/h2><p>Small pressures can influence judgement: wanting to satisfy a site request, staying on schedule or assuming another person completed a check. A deliberate pause and a clear division of responsibilities help expose those assumptions. After a dive, discuss what actually happened, including communication gaps and changes in conditions. A useful debrief identifies an action for the next dive rather than assigning blame.
