Ask which landmarks are useful and which areas should be avoided. A route that is easy to describe is usually easier for the buddy team to monitor than an ambitious circuit.

During a Pattaya reef briefing, a slope, depth contour or distinctive feature may help orient the group. Treat those as observations that need checking, not as a promise that the same feature will always be visible. Sand patterns and sunlight can also change or mislead.

Natural and instrument navigation work together

Natural navigation uses features such as reef shape, contours and prominent structures. Record the direction and appearance of the return route rather than assuming it will look familiar from the opposite direction. Monitor elapsed time, depth and gas alongside the scenery.

A compass indicates magnetic direction. Hold it in the position required by its design, keep it level when necessary, and recognise that metal equipment or wreck structure can affect the reading. Avoid staring at the instrument long enough to lose depth control or buddy contact.

Reciprocal bearings are geometry, not a guarantee

For a straight outbound compass heading, the reciprocal direction differs by 180 degrees. A heading of 60 degrees has a reciprocal of 240 degrees. This describes opposite directions; it does not guarantee arrival at the start point if current or swimming errors have moved you sideways.

Agree how distance will be estimated during training, such as a calibrated kick count or timed swim. Both depend on pace and conditions. In a current, the same heading and swimming time can produce a different track over the seabed.

Go a little deeper

heading versus track

Heading is the direction you point or swim relative to the compass. Track is the path actually travelled over the bottom. Water movement adds another component to that path. This is why an apparently accurate reciprocal heading can miss the entry point. Start with short supervised exercises in suitable conditions, compare the outcome with the plan and discuss the error. Navigation should reduce workload over time, rather than become a distraction from gas and buoyancy.

Check your understanding

Should I leave my buddy to find the boat?

No. Follow the site briefing and the separation and exit procedures taught in your training. An improvised solo search can turn a navigation problem into a larger incident.

Connect theory with training

PADI Advanced Open Water course

Pattaya dive-site guides

For a Pattaya trip, tell the team your qualification, last-dive date and learning goals so the practical programme can be matched to you.

Continue learning

Dive Planning: Breathing Gas, Computers and Buddy Limits

Deeper Dives and Wreck Awareness: Planning Beyond the Basics

Back to Advanced Open Water divers

Sources and further reading

PADI: continuing diver education

This is an independently written educational guide, not an official PADI course manual or certification assessment.
