A regulator reduces that pressure in stages and supplies gas at the surrounding water pressure when you inhale. Most introductory recreational dives use compressed air, rather than pure oxygen. The mouthpiece, mask and buoyancy device each do a different job: the regulator supplies gas, the mask creates an air space for vision, and the buoyancy control device helps manage flotation.<\/p><p>Understanding the names makes it easier to explain a concern. If a mouthpiece feels uncomfortable or the mask does not fit, tell the instructor before entering the water. Equipment should be appropriate, checked and familiar; a photograph of a complete kit is not an equipment check.<\/p><\/section><section id=\"topic-1\"><h2>Breathing and communication<\/h2><p>Breathe continuously and normally when using scuba. Do not hold your breath to save gas. Water changes how you communicate, so your instructor introduces agreed hand signals for OK, a problem, stopping, moving up or down, and gas information. A signal is useful only when your buddy or instructor sees and understands it.<\/p><p>Pay attention to the briefing and practise the signals before the dive. If you are unsure what was communicated, ask again. Good communication includes saying that you are uncomfortable; completing a dive is never more important than ending one appropriately.<\/p><\/section><section id=\"topic-2\"><h2>The buddy system is active participation<\/h2><p>A buddy is someone you plan, check and dive with, rather than another person who happens to be nearby. Discuss the route, communication, separation procedure and how the dive will finish. Beginners follow their instructor\u2019s directions and the limits of their introductory programme.<\/p><p>On a Pattaya reef, an interesting fish can easily draw attention away from the group. Look around regularly and maintain the position described in the briefing. Avoid touching the reef or moving into a restricted space to get closer to wildlife.<\/p><\/section><section class=\"edu-deeper\" id=\"deeper\"><p class=\"edu-kicker\">Go a little deeper<\/p><h2>why depth changes the equipment\u2019s job<\/h2><p>A regulator delivers gas at ambient pressure. The gas fraction does not become \u201cstronger air\u201d, but its pressure and density change with depth. Flexible air spaces in your equipment also change volume as pressure changes. This connects your breathing equipment with equalisation and buoyancy, which are explored in the next lessons.
